Dear SYC Shipmates:
As mentioned at the last two general meetings, the board is creating a Financial Planning Committee that will examine the club’s long-term capital outlay needs and operating expenses and make recommendations for addressing both issues to officers and to the membership.

Simply put, we want to figure out where we’re going financially, where we want to go and how we’ll get there. The committee will focus on those issues and frame them for the club as a whole.

The committee will address such issues as rehabbing, replacing and/or enlarging the island and rehabbing the parking lot, but those are merely two of many potential projects that have kicked around the club for years. One initial project, shoring up the clubhouse’s underpinnings, is already underway but no other major capital work is contemplated until the committee completes its work. The committee will fully examine all options on the island, the parking lot and other potential projects and will welcome suggestions from members about the club’s capital needs.

The second task for the committee is to look at the club’s operating expenses, including modification, if any, to the expense structure, new sources of operating revenues and comparison of SYC’s operations to other yacht clubs and private marinas. And in that area, too, it will welcome input from members.

I want to emphasize, however, that the committee’s task is not to endlessly debate what-ifs, but to settle on concrete proposals as quickly as prudence allows and present them fully to the board and membership for decisions. The committee will meet as needed with a specific agenda in an effort to finalize its recommendations within a period of months, not years, although there’s no specific timetable yet for completion. That will depend on the scope of the work.

Treasurer Dan Walters will chair the seven-member committee and other members will be Vice Commodore Bob Lygren, Port Captain Chuck Lenert and shipmates Rod Ward, James Cameron, Pam LaBella and Mike Bradburn. Please communicate with Treasurer Walters or any other committee member about your concerns and suggestions for improving the club’s facilities and operations.
